KUCCPS has officially opened applications for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes for the May 2026 intake — and here's what every KCSE candidate from 2000 to 2025 needs to know right now.
Whether you sat your KCSE last year or several years ago, this window is open for you. More importantly, any mean grade qualifies — this is not a programme reserved for A students.
What Is TVET and Why Should You Consider It?
TVET stands for Technical and Vocational Education and Training. These are hands-on, skills-based programmes designed to prepare you directly for the workforce — faster than a traditional university degree, and in fields where Kenya currently has a massive skills gap.
TVET institutions include:
- National Polytechnics — Kenya's premier technical institutions offering diploma-level training
- Technical Training Institutes (TTIs) — regional institutions offering certificates and diplomas
- Institutes of Science and Technology — focused on applied sciences and engineering trades
- Accredited Technical Colleges — private and public institutions with approved programmes
If you have been waiting for university placement results or wondering whether your grades are enough to pursue further education, TVET is a legitimate, government-backed alternative with real employment outcomes.
Who Can Apply?
KUCCPS has confirmed the following eligibility criteria:
- 2000–2025 KCSE candidates — you are eligible regardless of which year you sat your exams
- Any KCSE mean grade — from A to E, there is a TVET programme that accepts your grade
- Applicants must apply through the official KUCCPS student portal
This is one of the most inclusive placement windows KUCCPS has ever opened. If you have been holding back because of your grades, this is your opportunity.
Application Deadline: 18 March 2026
⚠️ Applications close on 18 March 2026. Do not wait until the last day.
KUCCPS has strongly urged applicants to log in early, review available courses carefully, and submit before the deadline. Late applications will not be accepted.

Why the Government Is Investing Heavily in TVET
This intake comes at a strategic moment. The Kenyan cabinet recently approved China's participation in upgrading more than 70 TVET institutions across the country under Phase III of the Kenya-China Project. This means:
- Modern, industry-standard training equipment in institutions near you
- Eight priority technical disciplines aligned with real labour-market demands
- Better employability for graduates — employers are actively seeking TVET-trained workers
The government is not just opening applications. It is actively building an ecosystem where a TVET qualification opens doors to employment, entrepreneurship, and even further academic progression.
TVET vs University: Which Is Right for You?
Many students treat TVET as a backup plan. That mindset is outdated. Here is an honest comparison:
| Factor | TVET | University | |---|---|---| | Duration | 1–3 years | 4–6 years | | Entry grade requirement | Any grade | Varies by cluster points | | Employment focus | Immediate practical skills | Broad academic foundation | | Cost | Generally lower | Generally higher | | Government investment | Rapidly increasing | Established |
In many trades — electrical engineering, ICT, hospitality, automotive mechanics, plumbing, construction — a TVET diploma holder can start earning sooner than a university graduate.
What Comes After TVET?
Completing a TVET programme is not a dead end. Kenya's credit accumulation and transfer system (CATS) allows TVET graduates to:
- Progress from certificate to diploma to degree level
- Transfer credits between institutions
- Pursue university education later with TVET qualifications counted
What About University Placement?
If you are a 2025 KCSE candidate waiting for the university placement window, that process is separate and has not yet opened. The current window is specifically for TVET May 2026 intake.
However, applying for TVET does not prevent you from also applying for university placement when that window opens. You can pursue both tracks and make your decision when you have more information.
For university placement, your KUCCPS cluster points will determine which courses you qualify for. Use our free calculator below to check your cluster points right now — no account required.
