If you are a KCSE student who scored well and is currently navigating KUCCPS applications, there is one more door you should know about before you commit all your choices to local universities — the 2027 Japanese Government MEXT Scholarship.
This is a fully funded government scholarship that covers your tuition, accommodation, and a monthly living stipend to study in Japan. No student loans. No fees. Just your grades and your ambition.
Here is everything you need to know, including whether your KCSE results qualify you.
What Is the MEXT Scholarship?
MEXT stands for the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan. Every year, the Japanese government funds a limited number of Kenyan students to study in Japan at zero cost to the student.
For 2027, there are three categories you can apply for:
- Undergraduate Programme — Study for a degree at a Japanese university
- College of Technology — Technical and engineering-focused diploma programmes
- Specialized Training College — Vocational and practical skills programmes
Each category has different KCSE grade requirements. Read carefully to find which one fits your results.
KCSE Grade Requirements by Category
1. Undergraduate Programme
This is the most competitive category and is best suited for students targeting degree-level study in Japan.
Requirements:
- Kenyan born on or after April 2, 2002
- Must be 18 years or older at the time of admission
- KCSE Mean Grade: A plain
- Grades of A plain in at least 4 subjects, which must include:
- Mathematics
- A minus in both English and Kiswahili
Orbit tip: If you scored an A plain mean grade, your cluster points are likely above 45 for most science and engineering combinations. You are competitive for top Kenyan universities AND for international scholarships like MEXT.
2. College of Technology
This category is designed for students interested in technical fields — engineering, applied sciences, and technology.
Requirements:
- Kenyan born on or after April 2, 2002
- Must be 18 years or older at the time of admission
- KCSE Mean Grade: A minus
- Grades of A minus or higher in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry
- B plus in English
Orbit tip: If your cluster points calculation shows strength in the sciences — specifically Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry scoring A minus or above — this category may be your strongest entry point into Japan's world-class engineering institutions.
3. Specialized Training College
This category focuses on vocational and practical skills training.
Requirements:
- Kenyan born on or after April 2, 2002
- Must be 18 years or older at the time of admission
- KCSE Mean Grade: B plain
- Grades of B plus or higher in Mathematics
- B plain in English
Orbit tip: Students who scored a B plain mean grade and are currently being directed toward TVET programmes by KUCCPS should seriously consider this category. Japan's vocational training institutions are globally ranked, and a qualification from a Japanese Specialized Training College opens international career doors that domestic TVET pathways currently do not.
How KCSE Cluster Points Connect to This Scholarship
When you run your KCSE analysis on Orbit, we calculate your cluster points using the KUCCPS weighted geometric mean formula:
C = √((r/R) × (t/T)) × 48
Where r = your relevant subject score, R = maximum possible score, t = total aggregate points, and T = maximum aggregate.
Your cluster points tell you which Kenyan degree programmes you qualify for. They also tell you something important for MEXT: if your cluster points are above 40 in a science or engineering cluster, you very likely meet the Mathematics and science subject requirements for the College of Technology category.
Here is a rough mapping:
| Your Orbit Cluster Points | Likely MEXT Category |
|---|---|
| 45 and above (A plain mean) | Undergraduate |
| 38–44 (A minus mean, strong sciences) | College of Technology |
| 28–37 (B plain mean, solid Maths/English) | Specialized Training College |
| Below 28 | Strengthen your application in other ways |
These are guidelines, not hard rules. Always verify your specific subject grades against the requirements above.

Should You Apply Even If You Are Also Applying to KUCCPS?
Yes — and here is why.
KUCCPS and MEXT operate on different timelines and different selection processes. Applying for MEXT does not affect your KUCCPS application. You should do both simultaneously.
If you get placed through KUCCPS and later receive an MEXT scholarship offer, you can defer or decline your KUCCPS placement. You are not locked in.
More importantly: most students never apply for international scholarships because they assume they do not qualify or the process is too complicated. The MEXT application process, while thorough, is straightforward if you start early. The students who get these scholarships are often not the highest scorers — they are the ones who applied.
Use Orbit to Know Exactly Where You Stand
Before you fill in any application — KUCCPS or MEXT — you need to know your cluster points precisely. Orbit calculates your weighted cluster points using the official KUCCPS formula, shows you every programme you qualify for at every public university in Kenya, and gives you AI-powered career guidance tailored to your specific grades.
If your results put you in the A plain or A minus range, Orbit will show you the degree and engineering programmes you qualify for locally AND give you the context to understand how your grades map to international opportunities like MEXT.
